New York -- Monday, May 30, 2005 We arrived home without event yesterday afternoon. Our time in Nagoya went fast, but the trip home was slow. We took a bus to the airport in Nagoya at 5:30am and flew to Tokyo. After a 2 1/2 hour layover in Tokyo, we flew the 14 hours to New York. It was a great trip! There's talk of another tour next year, maybe to Beijing! See the photos from our last full day in Japan, with snapshots backstage at Little Women and at the farewell party. ..........................................
Nagoya -- Tuesday, May 24, 2005 We arrived in Nagoya today via shikansen (bullet train). So far, this city is much more "chill" than Tokyo. Things are a little less hectic, and still very metropolitan. The hotel is quite different from our luxurious quarters in Tokyo, but still fine. Apparently housing is in very high demand here because of the World Expo. We are just a block from the train station and lots of good food & shopping. Tomorrow we have rehearsal for Little Women and then most of the day is free to go exploring. My sight-seeing time here will be much more limited than in Tokyo because of the education program we covers are doing on Friday. ..........................................
In case you haven't heard, I'm in Japan with New York City Opera from May 15- 29, 2005. I am covering the roles of Jo March in LITTLE WOMEN and Suzuki in MADAMA BUTTERFLY. We have one performance of each opera in Tokyo and the same in Nagoya. We travel to Nagoya on May 24. Approximately 120 people are here representing NYCO, including cast members, orchestral musicians, crew, artistic staff, etc. Some NYCO people were lucky enough to bring their family or significant others with them. The composer of Little Women, Mark Adamo, is also here. He and the covers (me included) will be presenting excerpts from Little Women at a girls' school in Nagoya on the 27th. This informational presentation will prepare the girls' for seeing the full production the next day. All of the people I've met so far are really, really nice, including the Japanese. All the Japanese are exceedingly polite. The service in the hotel and restaurants is exemplary, and tipping is not allowed! :-)
